Results – Sunday 4th May 2014

On a day where the competition was called “Irish Nett” the day started in damp and drizzly conditions that would have not been out of place on any part of the “Emerald Isle”. The course was showing signs, in places, of the huge amount of rain fall over the last fortnight and these conditions for most of the 11 teams proved quite a handicap. However, the marquee group of Ron “Ronbo” Olivecrona, Stu “Stew” McLaren, Simon “Mozzy” Amos and Dave “Big Dave” Barrow, floated around the course and posted the excellent score of 211. This was seven shots better than the two teams which finished joint second. They were Steve Ricketts, “Doc” Donaghy, Gary “Sergio” Coutts and Mick “Little Mick” Wattam and the other team of Mark “Mooooose” Morrissey, Simi Singh, Greg Beale and Collin Minnaar.

Results – ANZAC Day 2014

We recognised ANZAC Day 2014 with a short poignant ceremony conducted by club members Les Buckley, a Falklands War veteran and Junior Golfer Alex Lopez-Sanchez (from Kapiti Brass Band) who played the Last Post on his cornet.

On arrival members were offered a tot of rum, ANZAC biscuits and rum balls to get things under way.  After the formalities, the players got down to the competition of the day, having the use of just three golf clubs of their choice and a putter, this symbolically recognised that those troops at ANZAC Cove were also considerably short of equipment.

Though the showery weather was a slight annoyance, the 94 players in the field, all played with great invention and spirit.

At the conclusion the Ladies winner was Robyn Olivecrona with 36 points followed by Chris Balloch and Therese Hallam-Eames, both with 33 points and 4th Sheila Jennings.  In the Men’s competition there was a tie for 1st place between Doug Stevens and Hugh Shields, both on 39 points with Doug winning the trophy after a tie breaking ‘countback’. Third home was this year’s Club Captain, Graeme Wallis on 38 points, 4th Peter Burleigh (aka Wonder Woman), 5th Matt Hobson, 6th David Morris, 7th Gary Turner (Wonder Woman’s twin), 8th Cliff Martin tied with Mick Wattam.

This the third year of this popular event and had a record participation. Hopefully, next year will be bigger still.

The photographs taken on the day can be seen in the Gallery ->Anzac Day 2014, and on our Facebook page – Waikanae Golf Club and even if you don’t have a facebook account you can see them all by using this facebook link or quick link to the Gallery here.

Midweek Men

Congratulations to Harry Ward who won the Stableford Competition with 41 points. Harry, a Junior golfer, playing golf during his Easter School Holiday, scoring 93 and breaking 100 for only the second time since he began playing golf. Playing with Ed Isaac, Chairman of the Board, didn’t ruffle Harry and Ed commented he was both “miffed and chuffed being beaten by a 10 year old”.

Mike Casey came second with 39 points, Bernie Shiell and Ken Thompson joint third with 38 points and Rod Cavaye, Stewart Cox and John Scrimshaw joint fifth with 37 points. 47 players were in the field.

As this was also the first round of the Midweek Men’s 2 Day Stableford Cup Competition, the leader after round 1 is Mike Casey, closely followed by Bernie Shiell and Ken Thompson with the second and final round planned for Tuesday 29th April 2014.

Weekend Men

Twenty-two players arrived on the course, to be met by a blustery southerly.  This coupled with some golfers having played Interclub the previous day, meant good scores were going to be at a premium in the Waikanae Tyre & Lube Golfer of the Year and Woollen Roof Insulation Monthly Medal.  The winner with a fine score of nett 67 was Brian Geddes.  Five shots behind and in second place was Chris Turner, last year’s Golfer of the Year, with a nett 72.  In third place was the in-form Steve Fraser, who matched Gary Coutts with nett 75. This leaves the league table, after three rounds in an intriguing position.  Brian Geddes is in poll position on 91 points, with Kerry Jensen 7 points adrift and in third place is the rapidly shrinking Mark “Mooose” Morrissey with 80 points.  Sixteen players remain in contention of 1st place, being within 40 points of the leader.  The next round takes place on Sunday 11th May 2014.

An hours lay-in greeted the 28 golfers taking part in the second round of the 36 Hole Net Stroke Cup.  Tiredness was never going to be an issue, but would the tension of the situation be the deciding factor? Simon Amos with a 5 shot lead, should have been a straightforward winner, but as with golf at all levels (ask Adam Scott), tension can affect even the best of them.  Steve Fraser, second after the 1st round and with nothing to lose, played accordingly and shot a second nett 70.  Simon on the other hand had to grapple with his demons but held on, just, with a nett 74 to take out the cup by the slimmest of margins, a single shot.  Third, two shots back on 142 was David “Seve” Morete, with Ed “Chairman” Isaac in 4th with 146, Cliff Martin 5th with 147 – shame he was playing golf not snooker!”
