The first event was held at Otaki on March 2nd. 34 youngsters (11 from Waikanae) were involved in Ambrose and 9 Hole Kiwi Tees and 9 hole Men’s tees. It was great fun! Junior Golf Update 27 November 2013
Golf is in the air, and over the past 8 weeks, 42 young Junior Golfers, aged between 7 and 13 have participated in the Waikanae Junior Golf Programme at our Club each Monday afternoon. In addition to the first time golfers we have had many children return from our 2012 Programme, to learn more about our wonderful game. This year we have run two sessions, one from 4-5.30pm for primary students and a session from 5.30 – 7.00pm for mostly secondary students. Many thanks to our Club Members who have trained as Community Coaches and who continue to introduce young players to the skills and etiquette of the game. We have some keen, young players out there and it is great to see them on the course in their own time practising, playing the course and improving their game. Our monthly Junior Competitions on a Sunday have been very popular and we had 22 youngsters play in the competition on Sunday 24 November. We hosted a small group of Otaki players who joined in the competition. Our Graduation for Juniors is on 9 December 2013 and parents will join us for Prizegiving and a Family BBQ. In Term 1 many of these young players will either be working towards getting their Junior Red handicaps, or improving their current handicaps with some players playing the White tees. All this bodes well for the future membership of WGC. Our thanks to the Club, the Board, Club Captain, our Junior Convenor and Committee, and our WGC members for the encouragement and support for Junior Golf at Waikanae. WGC Juniors Shine at the Junior Tiger Competition
11 of our Waikanae Juniors, 6 boys and 5 girls, with parents and grandparents caddying, took part in the Junior Tiger regional competition at Levin on Sunday 24 March 2013. It was a fantastic day and our young golfers looked very professional in their Waikanae Junior shirts. It was a superb experience for our youngsters and there was great excitement in the Waikanae team and applause for Harry Ward (9), who scored the second best Gross Score in the 11-and-Under age group. Harry shot 40! Congratulations to Harry and to all our Juniors for their participation and excellent behaviour. Thanks too to parents, grandparents and coaches who have supported our young players.

A Win for Waikanae Juniors at Otaki
Congratulations to Fergus, Hannah, Josh Singleton, Harry, Dylan, Liam and Ollie for their excellent play and professional golfer behaviour at Otaki on Saturday 3rd May 2013 when they represented Waikanae Junior Golf. The outcome of the combined Team Stableford Competition was that Waikanae won the competition with 168 points, with Otaki close behind on 160. Fantastic outcome, well done!
Gill Mc Conway of Otaki commended our Waikanae Juniors for arriving early and for practising their chipping, putting and bunker shots, so that they were well prepared before teeing off. Thank you to our young golfers and to their parents for their support with transport and caddying.
Junior Golf Programme
We are keen to encourage young golfers to join our Junior Golf Programme.
We work closely with NZ Golf in the ongoing development of our Programme. Introductory coaching over 8 weeks followed by 9 holes played once a week usually on a Monday afternoon to enable new young golfers to get, and then improve, their handicaps. See the News section above for the next coaching course.
A monthly competition is held on a Sunday afternoon once a month for Juniors at 3.00pm, and from May – September (our winter months), tee times are reserved for Juniors between 2.00 – 2.30pm each Sunday. Juniors still at Primary School must be supervised by their parents when they are playing on the Waikanae Golf Course over the winter.
Marg Templer would love to hear from you to register your interest in joining the Junior Golf Programme or becoming a Junior Member. Ring her on 04 293 6399, Extension 2 (Monday to Friday 11 am to 5.30 pm) or email
